Starfleet's rank structure has not dramatically changed for a very long time, and the strong sense of continuity has led most citizens of the Federation to know precisely what to expect structurally.
Fleet Admiral: The senior-most rank in Starfleet short of the positional Commander-in-Chief, this Admiral is responsible for management and control of the entire Fleet, and is typically only found in time of war.
Admiral: Normally Admiral is the highest rank in Starfleet, and can accompany a senior-most position in the Command hierarchy of Starfleet as well as direct command of fleet organizations.
Vice Admiral: It is far more common to see more junior admirals heading up positions in the Command hierarchy, like Starfleet Medical or Starfleet Security.
Rear Admiral: A Rear Admiral is the lowest level of full flag rank, and can typically be found in a more direct command of a fleet or squadron.
Captain: Captains are the backbone of Starfleet, heading up the command of individual ships and stations.
Commander: Most Commanders serve as Executive Officers, supporting the Captain of a ship in daily operation until the day they advance to a full command, but some Commanders may hold smaller Command Posts themselves.
Lieutenant Commander: Lieutenant Commanders are Senior Officers, who typically manage large departments inside a Starfleet venue like a ship or a starbase, and are qualified to assume command if needed.
Lieutenant: The most senior level of Junior Officer, if a Lieutenant heads up a department they are typically considered a senior officer with potential to rise higher in the command field.
Lieutenant Junior Grade: A step up from a fresh Ensign, the JG has additional responsibilities and more sophisticated duties. On smaller postings, this rank and below inhabit shared quarters.
Ensign: An Ensign is a fresh graduate of either Starfleet Academy or an Officer Candidate School, and fulfills the most basic officer duties. Starfleet is much more officer-heavy than other forces, and as a result there are very high numbers of junior officers in the fleet.
Warrant Officers: Warrant Officers range from third to first class, and are technical experts who do not have an officer's commission.
Petty Officers: Master Chief, Senior Chief, and Chief Petty Officers are the most senior non-commissioned officers. They are typically career Starfleet. More junior Petty Officers range from third to first class, and have a degree of expertise in their fields, and directly supervise crewmen.
Crewmen: Crewmen, ranging from third to first class, are the most basic level of Starfleet personnel.
